Abbie’s injury and her recovery process have introduced our family to people we never would have otherwise met, revealed needs about which we had been ignorant, and shown us the kindness and love of people to a magnitude we could not have imagined. We want, in some way, to pass on all of the support and compassion that we have received in our most challenging time.
One of the most worthy needs we have noted here in Hawaii is pediatric rehabilitation services. Because of our geographic isolation, injured kids in Hawaii do not have access to many of the rehab opportunities available on the mainland. We want that to change – we want to create an environment of healing and hope right here in the Islands.
We have been overwhelmed by the friends and family wanting to help us financially as we care for Abbie. We have been so abundantly blessed, and have access to resources and people that many families may not have. So, instead of a fund for Abbie, we have established one in her honor, called “Abbie’s Angels” that will be administrated by the Kapiolani Health Foundation.
For many injured children, rehabilitation is the difference between having a limited, challenging future or a future full of the hope, adventure, and dreams that we wish for all of our kids. For many families, a devastating injury to a child is overwhelming, and the care of a recovering child can be exhausting and isolating. It is our deepest hope that the Abbie’s Angels fund will bring encouragement, provide resources, and, most importantly, help to heal the children and families affected by traumatic injury. There are many talented people currently working on this issue in Hawaii, and we are excited to be joining their team.
We are humbled that people desire to support us in this endeavor, and so grateful that we can turn this challenge in our lives into a source of blessing through all of you, who are not only Abbie’s angels, but are ours as well.
